Trump Sends Message to Colombia

Columbia president Gustavo Petro has refused to accept flights carrying criminal illegal aliens deported from the United States. As promised, the Trump administration is rounding up and deporting these illegal aliens, returning them to their homeland. President Trump’s response to Colombia’s refusal was swift and unsurprising: he announced immediate tariffs, a travel ban, and other measures.

Something has to give in this situation. While we wait and see who yields first, here are my thoughts:

Criminal behavior must be held accountable.

There are several layers to this situation. Reports have indicated that many countries, including Columbia, deliberately sent criminals to the U.S. during the Biden administration. The Trump administration is now addressing this by simply holding those criminals accountable. The Colombian government must be held accountable as well.

The Colombian people are not the problem.

I have been to Colombia several times to preach. In fact, I was scheduled to return next month but had to reschedule. I love the Colombian people. Our church supports missionaries in Colombia, and I consider some national pastors dear friends. I have often said I could live in Colombia.

As Americans, we should remember that the Colombian people are not the problem. They are not our enemies. Many of them are our brothers and sisters in Christ, and they need our prayers now more than ever.

Strong leadership is on display.

There is no doubt that strong leadership makes the difference. Like him or not, President Trump leads from a position of strength. This stands in stark contrast to the leadership we experienced under the Biden administration. As citizens, we benefit from decisive, strong leadership. For those of us in leadership positions, this is a reminder to lead with strength for the benefit of those under our care.

Pray for our nation and the people of Colombia. Give to missions. I look forward to my next trip to Colombia, whenever that may be. Hopefully, this situation will be resolved soon. Let this also serve as a reminder: it is okay to be “America First.”

However, as Christians, we should look at the entire world as our mission field.
